Birding highlights at Spurn  - June 2002

 

Main movements and falls, etc ( with unusual species and races in bold ).

 

1st        Southerly passage;  Swift 13, Skylark 3, Sand Martin 6, Swallow 180, House Martin 100, Jackdaw 3, Greenfinch 4, Goldfinch 10. Grounded migrants;  Wheatear 1, Chiffchaff 1, Willow Warbler 2, Spotted Flycatcher 3, Jay 1, Chaffinch 6. 2 BEE-EATERS flew north over the Wire Dump and then over the Triangle.  Seabirds;  Fulmar 6 (S), Gannet 9 on the Humber, Kittiwake 77 on the Humber, 8 Arctic and 3 Common Terns out, Razorbill 4 (S), Puffin 1 on the Humber. General ;  3 Greylag Geese west,  and Ruff and Black-tailed Godwit on the Humber.

 

2nd        Southerly passage ;  Swift 29, Skylark 1, Swallow 200, House Martin 150, Flava Wagtail 3, Goldfinch 3, Linnet 3. Grounded migrants;  Cuckoo 1, Lesser Whitethroat 1, Garden Warbler 1, Willow Warbler 5, Spotted Flycatche 7, a red singing male Common Rosefinch in Canal Hedge and a 1st yr/ female SERIN in Canal Hedge which left south. Seabirds ;  Fulmar 23 (S), Gannet 31 (S) 10 (N), Kittiwake 31 (S), Sandwich Tern 18 (S), Arctic Tern 17 out, Guillemot 16 (S), Razorbill 7 (S), Puffin 2 (S).

 

3rd        Southerly passage ;  Hobby 5 +1 north, Swift 670, Sand Martin 2, Swallow 220, House Martin 180.  Grounded migrants ;  Turtle Dove 4, Cuckoo 1, Short-eared Owl 1, Reed Warbler 1, Lesser Whitethroat 1, Spotted Flycatcher 3, Golden Oriole 1 at the Point left high to the south at 08.20, Siskin 2, a singing male Common Rosefinch at the Point left high to the south at 08.00.  Seabirds ;  Fulmar 5 (S) 2 (N), Gannet 16 (S) 3 (N), Shag 1 (N), Kittiwake 22 (S), Sandwich Tern 33 (S) 4 (N), Commic Tern 13 out, Razorbill 11 (S). General ;  Whimbrel 1, Greenshank 1.

 

4th        Southerly passage ;  Swift 78, Sand Martin 2, Swallow 320, House Martin 140. 

Grounded migrants ;  Turtle Dove 1, Cuckoo 1, Spotted Flycatcher 2.  Seabirds ;  Gannet 3 (N), Sandwich Tern 29 (S), Arctic Tern 1 (S), Razorbill 11 (S).

 

5th        Southerly passage ;  Swift 9, House Martin 8.  Grounded migrants ;  Cuckoo 1, Spotted Flycatcher and a Golden Oriole at the Wire Dump was later seen over the Narrows and the Kew Villa.

Seabirds ;  Fulmar 6 (N) 7 (S), Gannet 82, Common Scoter 9 (S), Auk sp. 59 (N), Razorbill 21 (N), Guillemot 9 (N), Puffin 4 (N).

 

6th        Southerly passage ;       Hobby 1, Swift 2, House Martin 10.  Grounded migrants ;  Cuckoo 1, Reed Warbler 1, an Icterine Warbler at the Warren was the first for 2 years !!!, Garden Warbler 1, Willow Warbler 2, Spotted Flycatcher 4, Siskin 2.  Seabirds ;  Fulmar 4, Gannet 20, Shag 1, Kittiwake 150, Sandwich Tern 5. General ; 2 Brent Geese, 1 Barn Owl.

 

7th        Southerly passage ;  Swift 1, Swallow 7, House Martin 3.  Grounded migrants ;  Turtle Dove 2, Fieldfare 1, Lesser Whitethroat 1, Chaffinch 5. Seabirds ;  Fulmar 4 (N), Gannet 67 (N), Kittiwake 18 (N), Sandwich Tern 10, Commic Tern 19 (N), Guillemot 5 (N), Razorbill 2 (N).

 

8th        Southerly passage ;  Lapwing 7, Swift 66, Skylark 1, Sand Martin 3, Swallow 126, House Martin  32, Goldfinch 2, Crossbill.   Grounded migrants ;  Turtle Dove 2, Cuckoo 1, Reed Warbler 2, Spotted Flycatcher 2, Siskin 2.  Seabirds ;  Red-throated Diver 3, Gannet 31 (N), Mediterranean Gull 1, Arctic Tern 6 (S), Razorbill 8 (S).

15th     Southerly passage ;  Canada Goose 14, Marsh Harrier 2, Swift 1,000, Swallow 60, House Martin 60, Linnet 100. Seabirds ;  Gannet 3, Sandwich Tern 50 (S)+ 32 in.

 

16th      Southerly passage ;  Swift 350, Sand Martin 30, Swallow 50, Golfinch 8, Linnet 70.  Seabirds ;  Manx Shearwater 3 (S), Gannet 35 (N) 11 (S), Mediterranean Gull 1, Puffin 1 (N). General ;  2 Brents and 800 Knot on the Humber.

 

17th      Southerly passage ;  Swift 600, Sand Martin 30, Swallow 20, House Martin 3.

 

18th      Southerly passage ;  Hobby 1, Swift 211, Swallow 4, Alba Wagtail 2.  Grounded migrants ;  Grey Wagtail 1.  General ;  4 Grey Herons and 1 Spotted Redshank on the Humber.

 

19th      Southerly passage ;  Swift 44, Sand Martin 5, Swallow 14. Grounded migrants ;  Turtle Dove 3, Flava Wagtail 1. General ;  Barn Owl 1.

 

20th      Southerly passage ;  Swift 20, Sand Martin 2, Swallow 6, House Martin 2, Goldfinch 4.   Seabirds ;  Fulmar 2, Manx Shearwater 4 (S), Gannet 11, Mediterranean Gull 2, Kittiwake 14, Sandwich Tern 40, Guillemot 6, Razorbill 1.  General ;  5 Brents, Little Stint and Curlew Sandpiper on the Humber and a Hobby over the Warren.

 

21st      Southerly passage ;  Hobby 1, Little Ringed Plover 3, Swift 800, Sand Martin 22,House Martin 10, Flava Wagtail 1, Willow Tit 1 moved south from the Warren to the Point. General ;  a pair of Garganey  and a Mediterranean Gull on the Humber.

 

22nd      Southerly passage ;  Hen Harrier , Lapwing 19, Little Stint 1, Swift c.4,000, Sand Martin 8, Swallow 31, House Martin 30, Grey Wagtail 1, Linnet 54.  Seabirds ;  Fulmar 2 (N), Manx Shearwater 2 (S), Gannet 15 (N) 7 (s), Kittiwake 9 (S), Sandwich Tern 73, Guillemot 6, Razorbill 2.

An  “ orange-billed “Tern flew south at sea past the narrows at 14.54.

 

23rd      Southerly passage ;  Grey Heron 5, Greylag Goose 14, Hobby 1, Lapwing 16, Swift 320, Sand Martin 50, Swallow 17, House Martin 3, Grey Wagtail 1, Goldfinch 6.  Grounded migrants ;  Turtle Dove 1, Crossbill 4 at Kew. 

 

24th      Southerly passage ;  Swift 9, Sand Martin 14, House Martin 4.  General ;  2 Whimbrel on the Humber.

 

25th      Southerly passage ;  Swift 350, Sand Martin 11, Swallow 4. Grounded migrants ;  Grey Wagtail .

 

26th      Southerly passage ;  Grey Heron 1,Swift c.3,500, Sand Martin 13, Swallow 5, House Martin 1.
