Birding highlights – January 2003

Main movements and falls, etc, with unusual species in bold

 

1st         Grounded birds ;  Stonechat 2, Rock Pipit, Blackbird 24, Fieldfare 14 and Snow Bunting 2.  Sea birds included 11 Little Gull  and 8 Kittiwake at the Point.

General ;  a Spotted Redshank on the Humber and 5 White-fronted Geese in the Triangle.

 

2nd       Grounded birds ;  Woodcock 2, Robin 8, Blackbird 32, Fieldfare 20.

General ;  5 White-fronted Geese in the Triangle and a ringtail Hen Harrier u-turned over there.

 

3rd         Grounded birds ;  Woodcock 1, Stonechat 1, Fieldfare 134. Song Thrush 3, Redwing 2 and Blackcap 2 at the Point. Seabirds ;  a Little Auk  was found on the beach after a heavy snow storm, it was later ringed and released. General ;  a Whooper Swan and 9 Pale-bellied Brents were on the Humber and a Peregrine came in high from the east and was seen hunting over the Humber.

 

4th         Grounded birds ;  Water Rail  1, Woodcock 2, Meadow Pipit 36, Rock Pipit 1, Stonechat 1, Fieldfare 89, Song Thrush 1, Redwing 12.  General ;  Goldeneye 3, Red-breasted Merganser 1.   

 

5th         Grounded birds ;  Woodcock 3, Meadow Pipit 17, a Waxwing seen over Kew was later seen in the Triangle, Blackbird 13, Fieldfare 24, Song Thrush 4.

 

6th         Grounded birds ;  Woodcock 5 at the Point, a Waxwing in the Triangle, Fieldfare 27, Redwing 1, Goldcrest 1.

 

8th         Grounded birds ;  Woodcock 3, Fieldfare 25, Song Thrush 2.  Seabirds ;  Red-throated Diver 11, Shag 1 found dazed on the road was later returned to the sea. General ;  5 Whooper Swan  in the Triangle and a Peregrine over the Humber.

 

9th         Grounded migrants ;  Woodcock 4 at the Point and 1 at the Warren, Robin 7, Fieldfare 14.

General ;  Pale-bellied Brent Goose 9 off the sea onto the Humber.

 

10th       Visible migration ;  a Waxwing flew south over the Warren. Grounded migrants ;  Fieldfare 13.

 

11th       Visible migration ;  Greenfinch 3, Goldfinch 2, Linnet 1. Grounded migrants ;  Common Snipe 2, Robin 5, Fieldfare 2. General ;  Brent Goose 552 and 9 Pale-bellied on the Humber.

 

12th       Visible migration ;  Waxwing south over the Warren. Grounded migrants ;  Rock Pipit 1, Fieldfare 16. Seabirds ;  Red-throated Diver 12 and a Black-throated Diver 1 north. General ;  Lapwing 28, Common Snipe 28 and 48 Curlew all on the Humber.

 

13th       Grounded migrants ;  Fieldfare 1.

 

14th       Grounded migrants ;   Robin 2, Stonechat 2, Blackbird 9, Fieldfare 10, Redwing 1, Waxwing 10 at Wire Dump, Chaffinch 1, Greenfinch 14. General ;  Eider 41 (N).

 

15th       Grounded migrants ;  Fieldfare 6.  Seabirds ;  Red-throated Diver 9, Kittiwake 3, Guillemot 1. Ringing ;  Woodcock 1.

16th       Visible migration ;  Wood Pigeon 43, Chaffinch 1, Goldfinch 1 and Snow Bunting all moved (S). Grounded migrants ;  Meadow Pipit 2, Robin 2, Stonechat 2, Blackbird 15, Fieldfare 19, Song Thrush 1.  Seabirds ;  Red-throated Diver 11, Black-throated Diver 1(N), Kittiwake 1, Guillemot 1. Ringing ;  Greenfinch 1.

 

17th       Grounded migrants ;  Woodcock 2, Stonechat 2, Fieldfare 11, Greenfinch 11.

Seabirds ;  Red-throated Diver 21, Little Gull 1 and Kittiwake 1. General ;  Lapwing 56, Common Scoter 14 (N) and Wigeon 115.

 

18th       Grounded migrants ;  Woodcock 3, Fieldfare 5.  General ;  Wigeon 15, Sparrowhawk 1.

 

19th       Grounded migrants ;  Robin 7, Blackbird 28, Song Thrush 3, Fieldfare 8.

 

20th       Grounded migrants ;  Song Thrush 1.

 

21st       Grounded migrants ;  Woodcock 1, Song Thrush 1, Blackbird 21, Robin 6. General ;  Wigeon 48, Lapwing 380, Knot 1000, Bar-tailed Godwit 1000.

 

22nd      Grounded migrants ;  Robin 3, Blackbird 14, Fieldfare 3, Rock Pipit  1, Chaffinch 6, a Merlin in the Triangle. Ringing ;  Song Thrush 1.

 

23rd       Grounded migrants ;  Chaffinch 4.

 

24th       Grounded migrants ;  Robin 4, Blackbird 14, Fieldfare 3, Song Thrush 2.

 

25th       Grounded migrants ;  Woodcock 1, Skylark 6, Blackbird 13,  Chaffinch 8.  Seabirds ;  Red-throated Diver 1, Razorbill 1.

 

26th       Grounded migrants ;  Skylark 7, Waxwing 2 in Kilnsea, Robin 4, Stonechat 2, Blackbird 12,  Fieldfare 3, Song Thrush 2.  General ;  Brent Goose 279, Pale-bellied Brent 13, Wigeon 57, Mallard 63, Teal 12, Knot 2500, Dunlin 1050, Curlew 268.

 

27th       Grounded migrants ;  Water Rail 1, Rock Pipit 1, Fieldfare 2, Song Thrush 1, Jackdaw 1. Waxwing 2 still present in Kilnsea.  Seabirds ;  Red-throated Diver 17, Cormorant 1, Guillemot 2, Puffin 1.  General ;  Hen Harrier, Sparrowhawk and Merlin were all seen in the Triangle.

 

28th       Grounded migrants ;  Skylark 1, Song Thrush 1.  General ;  Wigeon 15.

 

29th       Grounded migrants ;  Blackbird 8, Fieldfare 1, Song Thrush 1. Seabirds ;  Red-throated Diver 3, Fulmar 1, Gannet 1, Auk sp 6, Kittiwake 650 (S).

 

30th       Grounded migrants ;  Common Snipe 1, Woodcock 1, Fieldfare 4.  Seabirds ;  Little Auk 10 (S) 1 (N). General ;  Common Scoter 8, Goldeneye 1.

 

31st       Grounded migrants ;  Meadow Pipit 36, Robin 8, Blackbird 7, Fieldfare 5, Redwing 17.

Seabirds ;  Gannet 2, Kittiwake 60, Auk sp. 5, Razorbill 8, Little Auk 140 (N). A Little Auk was found dead at the Lighthouse and another was found alive on the beach.  General ;  Wigeon 111, Gadwall 2, Mallard 76, Pintail 6, Eider 11, Common Scoter 1, Goldeneye 2.
