Birding highlights – February 2003

 

Main movements and falls, etc. with unusual species in bold

 

1st       Grounded migrants ;  Woodcock 1, Meadow Pipit 6, Stonechat 1, Fieldfare 1,  Song Thrush 2, Redwing 1, Chaffinch 3.  General ;  Eider 8 (N) and a pair of Peregrine were seen hunting over the Humber.

 

2nd      Visible migration ;  a Waxwing flew (SE) out to sea.  Grounded migrants ;  Water Rail 2 in the Triangle, Stonechat 1.  General ;  Pintail 17, Wigeon 76.

 

3rd       Grounded migrants ;  Meadow Pipit 3, Song Thrush 1.  Seabirds ;  Red-throated Diver 2, Black-throated Diver 1(N).

 

4th       Grounded migrants ;     Common Snipe 1.  Seabirds ;  a Shag was found exhausted on the road and a Skua sp. flew (N).

 

5th       Grounded migrants ;  Common Snipe 3, , Robin 7, Fieldfare 3, Blackbird 17, Song Thrush 5.  Seabirds ;  Red-throated Diver 1, Kittiwake 8, Razorbill 2, Little Auk 2.  General ;  Wigeon 63.

 

6th       Grounded migrants ;  Common Snipe 1, Robin 7.

 

7th       Grounded migrants ;  Common Snipe 3, Skylark 6, Meadow Pipit 11, Rock Pipit 3, Robin 11.  General ;  Wigeon 131.

 

8th       Visible migration ;  1000 Pink-footed Geese flew (NW), birds moving south included Stock Dove 1 u-turned, Wood Pigeon 3, Rock Pipit 2.  Grounded migrants ;  Skylark 7, Rock Pipit 1,  Robin 6, Snow Bunting 4 at Chalk Bank.  General ;  Pink-footed Goose 1 on Humber, an Egyptian Goose ( 5th record ) was in the Triangle later leaving south, Peregrine 1, Lapwing 122.

 

9th       Visible migration ;  750 Pink-footed Geese flew (NW). Grounded migrants ;  Robin 4, Blackbird 17.  Seabirds ;  Red-throated Diver 32, Kittiwake 4.  General ;  Wigeon 10.

 

10th     Visible migration ;  Lapwing 120 (S) at sea, Waxwing 1(S) over the Triangle.

General ;  Greylag Goose 1 (S), Pink-footed Goose 3 (S), Wigeon 29.

 

11th     Grounded migrants ;  Robin 9, Blackbird 16, Fieldfare 1, Song Thrush 4.   Seabirds ;  Red-throated Diver 75 (S), Guillemot 1.  General ;  Common Scoter 6, Golden Plover 600.

 

12th     Grounded migrants ;  Water Rail 1, Common Snipe 2, Robin 6, Blackbird 16, Fieldfare 2.

13th     Grounded migrants ;  Robin 7, Blackbird 19, Fieldfare 3.  Seabirds ;  Red-throated Diver 6, Guillemot 11.  General ;  Wigeon 180, Teal 30, Eider 3.
